About the Film

Counted Out explores how math and algorithms quietly shape modern life — from elections and employment to the news we see and the decisions made on our behalf — yet most people feel disconnected from the math behind it all. Directed by Vicki Abeles and featuring mathematician Ismar Volić, the film makes the case that mathematical literacy is essential to full participation in a democracy.
